“Trailer was great. We took it on a 4,500 mile journey We had some circumstantial issues on the road with the trailer. We lost a few lugs (and almost a tire) so we had to pay $800 for a mobilehub / stud repair in UT Separate from that, we hit some highway debris in AZ and broke a fender and some wiring. We came to a quick resolution with the owner on the repairs and he was more than reasonable. Nice trailer. Tough trip. ”

Choosing the Right Trailer to Rent in Montclair

Montclair has specific restrictions on where trailers can be parked, making advance planning especially important for local rentals. Whether you're moving furniture, hauling landscaping materials, or transporting equipment, confirm your parking location and loading requirements first. Run through these before you send a rental request.

  • Size and capacity: match deck length and payload to your biggest item, and leave room to strap it down safely.

  • Weight and brakes: stay within the trailer's rated load and your vehicle's tow rating, and keep tongue weight around 10 to 15 percent of the total. Under California Vehicle Code Section 26302, qualifying trailers with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more generally require brakes on at least 2 wheels, subject to the law's conditions and exceptions.

  • Unattached trailer parking: Montclair Municipal Code Chapter 8.38 generally prohibits parking unattached trailers on public streets, alleys, and highways in both residential and nonresidential districts, with limited exceptions. Arrange lawful parking before picking up a rental trailer.

  • Heavy commercial vehicles: Montclair also restricts parking certain commercial vehicles, trailers, and equipment rated at 10,000 pounds or more in residential zones. Check the applicable rules before parking heavy equipment or commercial hauling trailers near a property.

  • Community cleanup requirements: Montclair's neighborhood cleanup program excludes hazardous waste, including paint, batteries, chemicals, and tires. Confirm an approved disposal destination before loading a dump or utility trailer with mixed materials.

  • Hitch, chains, and wiring: confirm the ball size (usually 2 inches, or 2-5/16 for heavier trailers), your hitch class, and that the trailer's plug matches your vehicle. Cross the safety chains under the tongue.

  • Ramps and loading: for anything you roll or drive on, check for a ramp gate or low deck height; for tall or awkward loads, check deck width and tie-down points.

  • Open vs. enclosed: open trailers load fast and cost less; enclosed trailers protect cargo from Inland Empire dust, seasonal winds, and occasional heavy rain.

  • Get your questions answered: check the listing details first, and ask Toby, the towlos virtual assistant, anything else. After you submit a rental request, you can message the Host in towlos Chat to confirm dimensions, hitch, delivery, and anything specific to your load before they approve it.

Common Reasons to Rent a Trailer in Montclair

From delivering inventory for local businesses to moving household furniture and preparing for community gatherings, these are the most common reasons Montclair renters book a trailer, and the type that fits each job.

  • Furniture and household moves. Residents relocating around Montclair and nearby Inland Empire communities can use enclosed cargo trailers for furniture, appliances, boxes, and personal belongings. Utility trailers accommodate larger items that can be properly secured.

  • Home renovation projects. Roofing, flooring, fencing, and remodeling projects can require transporting building supplies and removing eligible debris. Utility trailers suit materials and tools, while dump trailers can accommodate appropriate debris loads when disposal arrangements comply with local requirements.

  • Landscaping and yard cleanup. Dump and utility trailers can transport soil, gravel, mulch, plants, branches, and landscaping equipment. Keep materials secured and choose an approved disposal facility for unwanted debris.

  • Business inventory and retail deliveries. Montclair's commercial areas, including the Montclair Place shopping district, create opportunities for transporting merchandise, fixtures, displays, and inventory. Enclosed cargo trailers help protect goods, while utility trailers accommodate larger equipment.

  • Neighborhood cleanup projects. Montclair's C.A.U.T.I.O.N. neighborhood cleanup program has organized volunteer efforts to remove weeds, litter, and debris. Utility trailers can help authorized volunteers transport tools and eligible supplies, subject to event instructions.

  • Community activities at Alma Hofman Park. Alma Hofman Park is located on Benito Street near Montclair's civic facilities. Small utility trailers can transport supplies for authorized activities when suitable unloading space has been confirmed.

  • Youth sports and recreation. Montclair's neighborhood parks and recreation programs support team activities and outdoor gatherings. Utility and enclosed trailers can help authorized organizers transport sports equipment, tents, and event supplies.

  • Local celebrations and vendor equipment. Community gatherings, pop-up markets, and permitted events can require tables, decorations, merchandise, and equipment. Enclosed cargo trailers keep supplies together and protected during transportation.

  • Contractor tools and machinery. Equipment trailers, flatbeds, and deckovers can transport compact machinery, ladders, scaffolding, and building materials for residential and commercial work. Confirm rated payload and lawful parking arrangements.

  • Car and motorcycle hauling. Car haulers, motorcycle trailers, and tilt-deck trailers can transport restoration projects, motorcycles, and non-running vehicles around Montclair and surrounding communities. Verify trailer capacity, loading angle, and tie-down requirements before submitting a rental request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a trailer in Montclair?
Daily rates on towlos typically range from $35 to $120 depending on trailer type and size. Utility trailers are the most affordable; enclosed, dump, and specialty trailers cost more. Prices are set by individual owners, and many offer weekly or multi-day discounts.
How do I book a trailer on towlos?
Search by location and dates, browse available trailers, and submit a booking request. The owner confirms availability and payment is processed securely. You'll receive pickup details once confirmed, most rentals are locked in within an hour.
Is damage insurance provided on towlos?
Yes. Every booking on towlos with an eligible trailer is backed by towlos Protect+, which provides coverage for physical damage to the trailer during your rental. Coverage details and limits are shown on the booking page. Review the towlos Insurance page if you have questions about what's included.
Do I need additional insurance to rent a trailer?
Requirements vary by owner. Some carry their own coverage; others ask renters to show proof of auto insurance. Check the listing details or message the owner before booking. Towlos Protect+ covers damage to the trailer, but your auto policy may be needed for liability.
What kind of hitch do I need?
Most utility trailers use a standard 2" ball hitch. Car haulers and heavier trailers may require a 2-5/16" ball. Check the listing specs and confirm with the owner that your vehicle's hitch class and tow rating are compatible before booking.
What size trailer do I need for a one-bedroom apartment move?
A 6×10 or 6×12 open utility trailer handles most one-bedroom moves, furniture, boxes, and appliances. If you have bulky items or a large couch, consider a 7×14 or larger. When in doubt, size up, it's easier to have extra space than to make two trips.
Do towlos hosts offer delivery in the Montclair area?
Some do. When searching, look for listings that mention delivery or message the owner directly. Delivery is especially useful if you don't have a truck or hitch set up. Many local hosts are flexible and happy to arrange drop-off for an additional fee.
Can I rent a trailer one-way?
Most towlos rentals are round-trip, you pick up and return the trailer to the same owner. Some owners allow one-way arrangements; contact them directly to ask. If you're relocating, it's worth messaging a few hosts to see who can accommodate.
