“Trailer was great. We took it on a 4,500 mile journey We had some circumstantial issues on the road with the trailer. We lost a few lugs (and almost a tire) so we had to pay $800 for a mobilehub / stud repair in UT Separate from that, we hit some highway debris in AZ and broke a fender and some wiring. We came to a quick resolution with the owner on the repairs and he was more than reasonable. Nice trailer. Tough trip. ”

Choosing the Right Trailer to Rent in El Cerrito

Steep neighborhood streets and limited unloading space can make trailer selection especially important in El Cerrito. Before moving furniture, landscaping supplies, or renovation materials, make sure your tow vehicle can manage the route and your cargo has an approved destination. Run through these before you send a rental request.

  • Size and capacity: match deck length and payload to your biggest item, and leave room to strap it down safely.

  • Weight and brakes: stay within the trailer's rated load and your vehicle's tow rating, and keep tongue weight around 10 to 15 percent of the total. Under California Vehicle Code Section 26302, qualifying trailers manufactured and first registered after January 1, 1966, with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more generally require brakes on at least 2 wheels, subject to applicable exceptions.

  • Recycling center restrictions: El Cerrito's Recycling + Environmental Resource Center does not accept ordinary furniture, carpeting, construction debris, concrete, or dirt. Confirm an appropriate transfer station or disposal facility before loading a utility or dump trailer.

  • Green waste separation: El Cerrito prohibits concrete, dirt, rocks, sand, manure, and certain other materials in residential organics carts. If you're hauling landscaping debris, separate accepted green waste from soil, gravel, and other excluded materials.

  • Hillside access and unloading: El Cerrito's hillside neighborhoods can involve steep driveways, narrow approaches, and limited turning space. Check the full towing route and identify a lawful, level loading location before bringing a large trailer to a residence.

  • Hitch, chains, and wiring: confirm the ball size (usually 2 inches, or 2-5/16 for heavier trailers), your hitch class, and that the trailer's plug matches your vehicle. Cross the safety chains under the tongue.

  • Ramps and loading: for anything you roll or drive on, check for a ramp gate or low deck height; for tall or awkward loads, check deck width and tie-down points.

  • Open vs. enclosed: open trailers load fast and cost less; enclosed trailers protect cargo from Bay Area rain, coastal moisture, and wind.

  • Get your questions answered: check the listing details first, and ask Toby, the towlos virtual assistant, anything else. After you submit a rental request, you can message the Host in towlos Chat to confirm dimensions, hitch, delivery, and anything specific to your load before they approve it.

Common Reasons to Rent a Trailer in El Cerrito

From moving into an East Bay home to transporting sports equipment to Cerrito Vista Park, these are the most common reasons El Cerrito renters book a trailer, and the type that fits each job.

  • Household moves and furniture transport. Residents relocating around El Cerrito or neighboring East Bay communities can use enclosed cargo trailers for furniture, appliances, boxes, and household belongings. Utility trailers accommodate larger items that can be safely secured.

  • Home renovations and remodeling. Residents replacing cabinets, flooring, roofing, or fencing can use utility trailers for building supplies and dump trailers for eligible debris. El Cerrito's recycling center does not accept construction debris, so arrange another authorized disposal destination.

  • Landscaping and hillside property maintenance. Dump and utility trailers can transport mulch, soil, gravel, plants, branches, and landscaping equipment. Secure loose materials and plan carefully for steep driveway access.

  • Sports at Cerrito Vista Park. Cerrito Vista Park features soccer and baseball areas, tennis courts, a walking track, and playground facilities. Enclosed or utility trailers can help authorized teams transport sporting equipment, tents, and tournament supplies.

  • Family picnics and celebrations. El Cerrito's picnic rental program offers reservable sites at Arlington Park, Canyon Trail Park, Cerrito Vista Park, and other locations. Small utility trailers can carry approved decorations and gathering supplies to designated unloading areas.

  • Community center events. The El Cerrito Community Center and park facilities support social gatherings, recreational programs, and organized events. Cargo trailers can transport supplies, displays, and equipment when venue delivery arrangements are approved.

  • Recycling and household cleanouts. El Cerrito provides recycling drop-off services for accepted materials and an annual scheduled curbside cleanup for eligible residential customers. Utility trailers can transport appropriate reusable items to donation centers, while materials excluded from the city recycling center must go elsewhere.

  • Small-business inventory and deliveries. Shops, vendors, and service businesses along San Pablo Avenue can use enclosed trailers for merchandise, displays, tools, and inventory. Confirm loading access and parking before arriving.

  • Contractor tools and building equipment. Flatbeds, deckovers, and equipment trailers can transport compact machinery, tools, lumber, and building supplies for local work. Account for towing capacity and safe unloading on sloped properties.

  • Cars and motorcycles. Car haulers, motorcycle trailers, and tilt-deck trailers can transport restoration projects, motorcycles, and non-running vehicles around El Cerrito and the East Bay. Match the trailer's rated capacity and loading equipment to the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a trailer in El Cerrito?
Daily rates on towlos typically range from $35 to $120 depending on trailer type and size. Utility trailers are the most affordable; enclosed, dump, and specialty trailers cost more. Prices are set by individual owners, and many offer weekly or multi-day discounts.
How do I book a trailer on towlos?
Search by location and dates, browse available trailers, and submit a booking request. The owner confirms availability and payment is processed securely. You'll receive pickup details once confirmed, most rentals are locked in within an hour.
Is damage insurance provided on towlos?
Yes. Every booking on towlos with an eligible trailer is backed by towlos Protect+, which provides coverage for physical damage to the trailer during your rental. Coverage details and limits are shown on the booking page. Review the towlos Insurance page if you have questions about what's included.
Do I need additional insurance to rent a trailer?
Requirements vary by owner. Some carry their own coverage; others ask renters to show proof of auto insurance. Check the listing details or message the owner before booking. Towlos Protect+ covers damage to the trailer, but your auto policy may be needed for liability.
What kind of hitch do I need?
Most utility trailers use a standard 2" ball hitch. Car haulers and heavier trailers may require a 2-5/16" ball. Check the listing specs and confirm with the owner that your vehicle's hitch class and tow rating are compatible before booking.
What size trailer do I need for a one-bedroom apartment move?
A 6×10 or 6×12 open utility trailer handles most one-bedroom moves, furniture, boxes, and appliances. If you have bulky items or a large couch, consider a 7×14 or larger. When in doubt, size up, it's easier to have extra space than to make two trips.
Do towlos hosts offer delivery in the El Cerrito area?
Some do. When searching, look for listings that mention delivery or message the owner directly. Delivery is especially useful if you don't have a truck or hitch set up. Many local hosts are flexible and happy to arrange drop-off for an additional fee.
Can I rent a trailer one-way?
Most towlos rentals are round-trip, you pick up and return the trailer to the same owner. Some owners allow one-way arrangements; contact them directly to ask. If you're relocating, it's worth messaging a few hosts to see who can accommodate.
