January Host of the Month: Austin- Building a Trailer Rental Business at 23

Some businesses start with a big plan. Austin’s started with something a lot of people can relate to: life got expensive, times got tough, and he needed a second income that didn’t require living at work. That’s when the trailer rental business came to mind.

“I was working an absurd amount of overtime, trying to provide for my family,” Austin shared. “I had two utility trailers to begin with. Purchased a car trailer on a credit card.”

That leap turned into a real trailer rental business, fast.

How Austin Got Started

Austin first heard about towlos through the Trailer Rental Facebook page. He already had a couple utility trailers, and when he decided to commit, he added a car hauler to expand what he could offer renters. Then he did the part that makes the biggest difference: he listed right away.

“Started immediately on towlos and Facebook Marketplace, and that’s all she wrote.”

More Family Time, Less Overtime

At 23 years old, Austin is balancing a full schedule — he’s a lineman during the day, a husband, and a dad to two kids(a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old). His wife stays home with their kids, so stable income and time together matter.

Running trailer rentals has helped Austin cut back on overtime and be home more — which was the goal from the start.

Life Outside of Work

When he’s not working his day job or fixing up trailers, Austin is all about family time and the outdoors. You’ll catch them doing the simple stuff that ends up being the best stuff: going to the park, hitting tractor pulls, or going out to eat together.

And when he gets a little free time, Austin stays busy with:

  • working on tractors
  • hunting
  • the occasional fishing trip

Austin’s Trailer Fleet

Austin’s fleet is a great example of building a lineup that covers a lot of renter needs — from weekend home projects to heavier cleanup jobs to hauling vehicles. With a mix of utility trailers, a dump trailer, and multiple car haulers, he’s set up for variety and repeat rentals.

Utility Trailers

Utility trailers are the “everyday workhorse” option — great for homeowners, small businesses, and weekend projects.

  • 2021 Carry-On 5×10 Utility Trailer
Ideal for smaller loads like furniture, boxes, landscaping supplies, and quick pickup runs.
  • 2021 Carry-On 6×14 Utility Trailer
A bigger option for larger loads like building materials, lawn equipment, ATVs, and bulk hauling.

Dump Trailer

Dump trailers make cleanup jobs quicker and way less painful, especially when unloading is the worst part of the job.

  • 2024 Big Tex 14LP Dump Trailer
Perfect for hauling debris, brush, dirt, and heavy cleanup loads where dumping saves serious time.

Car Haulers

Car haulers are a must-have for transporting vehicles for shows, repairs, moves, or longer-distance hauling.

  • 2024 Big Tex 10K Car Hauler (with winch)
The winch is a huge plus for non-running vehicles or anything that needs extra control loading onto the trailer.
  • 2025 Big Tex 70CH Car Hauler
A newer hauling option built for confident vehicle transport. Great for longer hauls and renters who want a stable, purpose-built setup.

Austin’s Advice for New Hosts

Austin’s story is proof you don’t need a massive fleet to start, you need momentum. Start with what you have, get listed, and keep improving as you go. When you build it with the goal of supporting your real life (not taking it over), the business can actually do what it’s supposed to do.
