We asked some of our friends in the Trailer Hustle Facebook group what they look for in a good trailer renter, and thanks to their input, we’ve got some real tips from real trailer hosts to help you be the best towlos guest possible. Renting a trailer is a great way to get things done, but being a respectful renter is key to ensuring a smooth experience for both you and the trailer owner. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when renting a trailer:
1. Respect the equipment—treat it like it’s yours
Take care of the trailer and all its accessories as if they belong to you. Whether it’s a utility trailer, car hauler, or dump trailer, showing respect for the equipment ensures the owner gets it back in good condition.

2. Be honest about your plans
If you’re planning a longer trip, say so upfront. Taking the trailer across state lines is fine, but don’t mislead the owner by calling it a short trip. Driving the trailer farther than expected affects the owner’s maintenance schedule and adds wear and tear they didn’t anticipate.

3. Be on time or communicate if you’ll be late
Punctuality is key! If you’re running late, let the owner know as soon as possible. Being on time or at least communicating any delays shows that you respect the owner’s time and helps avoid any unnecessary stress.
4. Communicate what you’re hauling and where you’re going
Let the owner know what you’re hauling and where you’re headed. This can help avoid any issues if the trailer may not be suitable for the cargo or if you need more straps, extra space, or specific handling instructions.

5. Leave it how you found it
If the winch controller cord was organized neatly when you received the trailer, return it the same way. Paying attention to these small details shows you care about the trailer and the owner’s time.
6. Be mindful of cleanliness
While you don’t have to return the trailer spotless, make sure it’s clean and free of debris. No one wants to deal with extra cleaning after a rental.
7. Communicate any issues
If something goes wrong or you damage the trailer during the rental, tell the owner right away. Being upfront and honest about any issues maintains a positive relationship and resolves things quickly.
By following these simple guidelines, you can be a respectful trailer renter and make the experience enjoyable for both you and the owner!
